BORN TO BE WILD
Our parks are very different from conventional zoos. It is not always possible to return animals to the wild and sometimes the only hope for the long term survival of certain species is to be able to live and breed in conditions as close to their natural habitat as possible. Our purpose is to ensure the continuation of this environment and remain a world leader in wild animal care and breeding, education and public awareness.
Conservation of rare and endangered species not only takes place at our parks. We work to save endangered species in their natural habitats and support many worldwide conservation activities.
These activities include the management of two gorilla rescue and rehabilitation projects, one in the Republic of Congo and other in the neighbouring state of Gabon where wild populations were hunted to extinction by the 1950's. Disease and the increase of commercialised hunting are threatening wild gorilla populations in both countries and orphans of this trade are often sold as pets. Local ministry officials confiscate these orphans and they are handed into our protection.
